Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Game Design Teaser
Matt Smith, Senior Game Designer
Since before I started with UVS, there was one IP that I always dreamed about working with. Up to this point in my career I’d worked with a variety of IP’s that shaped my youth, but none as impactful to my particular life as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I know I’m not alone in thinking this is the perfect world to visit for Universus, and am eager for the coming release when we get to share it with you.
To begin, I want to give you a rundown on what to expect out of the set.
The Setting:
The setting for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) set is a wholly modern one, taking place in our most recent canon representing the events of the Mutant Mayhem movie and the first arc of the Tales of the TMNT series. For fans of more classic TMNT series there will be awesome Alt-Art treatments for you to collect, but narratively speaking the current era is what you can expect.
Set Composition:
There are 15 different character cards found in boosters, supported by eight different resource symbols: Air, All, Earth, Evil, Fire, Good, Void, and Water. We felt that these were the best symbols to represent the set, but it is also a key part of our plan toward supporting the symbols that got less love in the last year.
You will find that all but one of these characters will be two symbol characters, and the rest of the cards within the set are Attuned Symbols, allowing them to play with any characters sporting their symbol.
Mechanics:
There are some cool mechanics in the set, but nothing as complicated as Shift or Outwit this time around, maintaining a core Universus experience that is easy for a newer or lapsed player to dive into.
Pizza
You’ll find a new pizza keyword trait on some of the (mostly) Good symbol cards in the set, representing the turtle’s love for their favorite food.

Scheme
Schemes are a new keyword trait used for a certain type of Action card design that represents the machinations of the villains. You’ll mostly find these on the Evil symbol.

Mechazoid
The Mechazoids are mutant hunting robots created by Bishop after the incident in Manhattan. You’ll find a few different synergies with these relentless hunters in the Void symbol.

Deflect and Frenzy
While not new with TMNT, you’ll find these less common keyword abilities back on an assortment of cards.

There is one more new mechanic in the set, but you’ll have to wait until we’re ready to talk about the Secret Rares in the set 😉
Aside from these named mechanics, you’ll find a variety of different themes in the set to build around both new and old deck strategies.
Characters:
You’ll have to keep an eye out toward our content creator allies for a look at the upcoming characters, but here are a couple support cards that might help you get an idea for who is in the set and what they are about.
Rocksteady is a brute with a one track mind toward destruction, while Wingnut is more of a graceful saboteur.

And as a cherry on top, here are a couple versions of cards from the booster set with the ‘80s cartoon treatment that you will find in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Starter Deck!

Look forward to more previews as we approach the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in UVS!
