From Top Cuts to Top Views: 10 Must-Dos in Canberra
UVS Games Staff
Heading to Canberra for the Regional? Between tournaments, side events, and hanging with friends, don’t forget—you’re also in one of the most interesting cities in Australia. Whether you’re flying in for the first time or just looking for something to do, Canberra has plenty to offer. Here are 10 things worth checking out while you're here.
Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre

Questacon is an interactive science center that makes learning feel like a hands-on adventure. You’ll find everything from lightning simulators and robot arms to optical illusions and gravity-defying experiences. It’s perfect for anyone who enjoys pushing buttons and asking “why does that do that?” There’s something engaging in every room, and you'll probably leave having learned something new without even realizing it.
National Zoo & Aquarium

This zoo is one of the most spacious and thoughtfully designed in the country. You can see everything from lions and tigers to tree kangaroos and red pandas—all in carefully maintained habitats. It’s an ideal way to spend a few hours outside the venue and reconnect with the kind of creatures that don’t care about who won last round (unless you won, then they totally care).
Mount Ainslie Lookout

This is the go-to spot for a full view of the city. From the top of Mount Ainslie, you can see Lake Burley Griffin, Parliament House, and the entire layout of central Canberra. It’s a peaceful, open-air location where you can take a breath and soak in the view before heading back to the action. Great spot to catch the sunrise or sunset if you're on the early or late side of things.
National Gallery of Australia

If you want a change of pace, the National Gallery is a great place to slow things down. With exhibits spanning everything from contemporary installations to classical works and Indigenous Australian art, the gallery offers a wide range of experiences in a slightly more calm setting. Whether you’re into bold colors, detailed sculpture, or abstract ideas, there’s something here that will catch your attention.
Lake Burley Griffin

This lake sits at the heart of the city and is surrounded by walking paths, parks, and museums. It's a great place to stretch your legs, go for a casual stroll, or just take a quiet moment by the water. You’ll find plenty of spots to sit and take in the views and to unwind before or after your games.
Cockington Green Gardens

This charming garden is filled with miniature buildings, landscapes, and tiny scenes from around the world. Each model is hand-crafted with amazing detail and set among beautiful flower beds and walking paths. Whether you're into miniatures, craftsmanship, or just looking for something light and fun, it’s a relaxing way to spend a bit of your afternoon.
National Bonsai & Penjing Collection

This space is a quiet gem, tucked inside the National Arboretum. The bonsai and penjing trees on display have been cultivated over decades. It’s peaceful, calming, and full of artistry. If your brain’s been running nonstop all day, this is a great place to reset and appreciate beautiful bonsai trees (I wish I didn't kill every bonsai tree I tried to care for…).
National Dinosaur Museum

Big bones, big teeth, big fun. The National Dinosaur Museum is packed with full-size dino models, fossil displays, and plenty of interactive elements to bring prehistory to life (not bring them back to life in a DNA laboratory way like a certain 1993 movie…so this is MUCH safer) . It’s especially fun if you’ve been a lifelong dino-lover or just enjoy learning a few cool facts you can bring back to the venue between rounds.
Axxe – Axe Throwing Canberra

Looking for a way to burn off some adrenaline? Axxe is exactly what it sounds like: you throw axes... It’s easy to get the hang of and makes for a fun group (or solo) activity—especially if you’re looking to switch things up from card sleeves and deck lists.
Jet Flight Simulator Canberra

This full-scale flight simulator puts you in the pilot’s seat of a commercial jet. You’ll learn how to take off, land, and even deal with emergencies—all from the safety of the ground. Whether you're into aviation or just want to try something completely different, this is an experience that feels both challenging and incredibly fun. It’s also a surprisingly great way to test your focus under pressure, if that’s your thing.
Canberra’s got more going on than most people give it credit for. If you’ve got downtime between rounds—or you’re sticking around a bit longer—there’s no shortage of cool places to explore, relax, or learn something new. Wherever you end up, enjoy the ride. You’ve earned it.
