Design Team Primer - The Death Symbol

Clint Badger

Welcome to the UVS Games Design Team Symbol Primer! Today we are going over the Death symbol, one of the favorites of control players and those who simply enjoy seeing their opponent's resources dwindle.

The Death Symbol

When it comes to ways the Death symbol plans to gain the advantage, you may need to use the term “advantage” loosely. To players of the Death symbol, their opponent’s loss is their gain. This commonly manifests in destroying your rival’s foundations, reducing your rival’s health directly, or sometimes just blanking the ability on a card completely.

Destruction

Cutting down your rival’s foundations can be just as good as speed manipulation when it comes to landing important attacks when you need them! It can be costly to keep down someone’s stage, so be wary of the costs inherent with such power. Destruction can be for either side, as well. You could find cards that destroy your own resources to push yourself ahead, or look to cards that destroy your opponent’s resources to keep them down.

Uses the theme
  • Eijiro Kirishima 3
New from Undaunted Raid, Kirishima has activated his Unbreakable side and is aiming to wear down his opponent as they attack in vain!

  • Blue Flame Spiral

  • Gale Force Punch

  • Gigantic Explosion

  • Tomura Shigaraki 1

  • Evil Gaze

Plays with the theme

While destroying your opponent’s resources can be reward enough itself, there are some cards that look to reward you for it! There is also room for cards that benefit you for destroying your own foundations, something that Bakugo & Kirishima are keen to do.

  • Learning to Harden

  • A Spear And A Shield

  • (Hardened Blitz)

  • Grenadier Bracers

Interacts with, or restricts rivals playing the theme

Does your local scene contain just one too many decks trying to destroy your foundations? Try out some of these cards to protect your board and keep the fight even!

  • Unbreakable
Kirishima is proving how adept he is at both protection and destruction! He can now protect his own pieces if his rival is attempting to destroy his foundations.

  • Chivalrous Competitor

  • Happy-Go-Lucky

  • High Value Target

  • Small and Limber

  • A Precious Lesson

Direct Damage

Direct damage to your opponent’s health can be much stronger than a direct damage pump pretty often. Why risk adding an extra 2 damage to an attack that could end up being blocked when you could just subtract 2 health from your opponent directly?

If you like this line of thought, perhaps you should look into some of the following Death cards for this playstyle!

Uses the theme

  • Eijiro Kirishima 3

  • Mina Ashido 2

  • Snipe

  • Gas Cloud

  • Throwing Knife Lunge

  • Exploding Pride

Plays with the theme

If you get a bit excited when your opponent starts losing health, you may want to look in to some of these cards to help you express your excitement more clearly!

  • Excited For Blood

  • Keen Observation

  • Knife Slice

  • Quick Draw

  • Himiko Toga 1

Minor Theme: Seal

As Death is one of the symbols that leans towards controlling the gamestate, that means that it is one of the premiere symbols to find abilities that seal your rival’s cards without much restriction.

  • Sir Nighteye

  • Binding Cloth Capture

  • Rushing Stab

  • Hulking Grimace

  • Seal Of Approval

  • Erase!

Characters who represent the symbol

  • Eijiro Kirishima 3

  • Shigaraki 1

  • Himiko Toga 1

  • Dabi 1

That about wraps up the Death symbol, and I hope that this article helps bring life to your Death decks! Join us next time as we flip the board on our opponents and delve into the strong style of Earth!
