Retro Rules Differences
Deck Construction
You are allowed to play any card in your deck regardless of symbol. However in order to play a card into your card pool it must symbol chain.
Symbol Chaining
In order to play a card into your card pool it must share a symbol with every other card in your card pool and it must share that same symbol with your character.
Example if your character has Good, Fire, and Void and you have a Good, Fire, Life card and an All, Fire, Life card in your card pool you could play a Fire card as it shares with both other cards in your card pool as well as your character. However you could NOT play a Life card as while it shares with both cards in your card pool it does not share Life with your character. If in the above example a Chaos, Evil, Void card was added to your card pool you would not be able to play any non-infinity card as it would not share with both your character and every other card in your card pool.
Attacking Turn 1
You are allowed to attack on your first turn.
Character Stacking
When a character card that shares an identity (name and IP but might have a different version number or title) with your starting character tries to enter your stage, it attaches to your starting character and you gain all abilities and symbols from the attached character you aren’t already gaining from another attached character.
The Attack Stack
The attack stack is a list of attacks waiting to resolve, if you would return to an open game state(the time when you could play a Form) and there is an attack on the attack stack, you begin resolving its attack sequence instead. If there are multiple attacks on the attack stack, the most recently added attack will begin resolving first, after it is resolved(or is dropped) continue resolving attacks on the stack until it is empty then return to an open game state.
Vital statistics
Some cards will reference a card's vital statistics. These will be on your character card either as a ♂️ or ♀️ symbol on the side of the card or as G: Ht: Wi: and BT: on the side of the text box. If a character is missing a vital statistic the effect referencing it will fail to execute the effect.
Keywords
Multiple
Enhance Discard X momentum (minimum 1, maximum the Multiple rating): Add X cards from the top of your deck to your card pool face down as multiple copies of this attack. Add those attacks to the attack stack
Multiple copies are face down attacks that copy all the printed values of the original attack except the text box( which includes its keywords), they cannot be added to your momentum for any reason, anytime something attempts to add them they will be sent to discard instead.
Reversal
Response [Hand] Play this card as a reversal: After your opponent's blocked attack resolves, add this attack to the attack stack. You can only play 1 reversal per block.
Safe
Static ability - Attacks cannot be played as a reversal to this attack
Gauge
Enhance: If this attack deals X or more damage, you may search your deck and discard pile for a character card that shares a name with your starting character and add it to your staging area. X equals the rating of the Gauge keyword granting this ability
[Character Name] Only
Static ability -This card cannot be played unless your identity is [Character Name].
If the card would ever try to enter your stage or card pool it creates a pause condition to send it to the discard. instead.

Alternate Art Cards
Cards that are an alternate art of a standard issue card are allowed to be used in place of the standard issue card as if it was a copy of that same card. This does not allow a deck to contain more than 4 copies of a single card.
Chrome Rare Cards
Chrome Rare Cards are serialized cards done in an unique foil treatment and are versions of standard issue cards. Chrome Rare Cards are allowed to be used in place of the standard issue card as if it was a copy of that same card. This does not allow a deck to contain more than 4 copies of a single card.
Reprinted Cards
When cards have the same name as cards from a previous UniVersus product where the symbols, difficulty, and check are all the same and the game text is identical or nearly identical, they can be considered the same card. Changes in terminology like ‘vitality’ to ‘health’ or ‘add this card to your staging area’ to “build it” should NOT be considered different functionality. If an old version of a card did not have a block and has been reprinted with a block, all versions of the card are considered to now possess a block.
