Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a newcomer eager to dive in, we’ll provide a concise overview of the exciting formats available in this article, offering a glimpse into the diverse ways you can construct your decks and engage in thrilling battles with your collection. UniVersus Formats

Formats provide frameworks for enjoying UniVersus. They dictate what size your deck needs to be, what cards you can include in that deck, and even the manner in which you build your deck.

Standard Format

If there was one format you could define as the default format for UniVersus it would be this one. In fact, that’s how it got its name: “Standard,” or the “standard format for playing UniVersus.” This format highlights the most recent releases to the world of UniVersus: all mechanically unique cards printed in the current year and past two years are legal for play, except where prohibited by banning.

This format is a great fit for players of all experience levels, creating puzzles and challenges that players may need some support and guidance on with deckbuilding.

Minimum Deck Size: 1 Starting character card, 60 card deck, and an optional 0 or 10 card sideboard.

Hero Too

Hero Too is a format that is the bridge to gap Standard and Retro. This format is a non-rotational format that uses all cards starting from the My Hero Academia Base Booster Set up to current release. It follows the Standard ban list along with additional bans to help ease players into the format. Hero Too allows for some powerful interactions and crazy combinations like Retro, but with a smaller card pool that allows for easier learning and access for players.

This format is a great fit for players looking to level up with the experience of older cards, and continue to use old favorites after they rotate from standard.

Minimum Deck Size: 1 Starting character card, 60 card deck, and an optional 0 or 10 card sideboard.

Retro

Our oldest format is “Retro,” home to all UVS Games printed cards that have ever been a part of UniVersus. Beloved by our veteran players who’ve been around since the beginning, Retro features the craziest, most powerful interactions. It has a steep learning curve and a massive card pool, so it’s best suited to players with a lot of experience.

Minimum Deck Size: 1 Starting character card, 60 card deck, and an optional 0 or 10 card sideboard

Spotlight Constructed

Does your playgroup love a particular world that has joined UniVersus? Spotlight Constructed is the format for you! Here only the cards from a particular intellectual property (IP) are allowed, no matter when they were printed. That could mean as little as a single set of eligibility, to more than a half dozen in the case of a world like My Hero Academia. Cards reprinted in other worlds are legal for play in Spotlight Constructed so long as they appeared in that world in at least one printed form, including as promos.

This format is perfect for players new to the game who want to move into Constructed deckbuilding and play, or who joined the game from being big fans of a particular IP. The smaller pool of cards to build from makes playing and deckbuilding less intimidating compared to formats with bigger card pools while still creating interesting deckbuilding challenges to solve.

Minimum Deck Size: 1 Starting character card, 60 card deck, and an optional 0 or 10 card sideboard.

Sealed

You don’t need to have a UniVersus collection to enjoy the Sealed format. It’s ideal for helping new players learn the game, which is why we make it the format of choice for our Prerelease events. Each player receives six booster packs, then gets to build their deck from that pool of cards.

Minimum Deck Size: 1 Starting Character card, 40 card deck, with all other cards from your packs counting as one’s “sideboard.”

Additional rules: “symbol restrictions” are removed for Sealed deck play; a player can play any cards from their packs with any character from the cards they opened regardless of whether symbols match or not. When a player “cycles” their deck, they remove 5 cards instead of the usual 10.

Booster Draft

For your most experienced players looking for the deepest challenge offered in the game we provide Booster Draft. In this format players each receive six booster packs. They sit in a circle, each open their first booster pack, place their character card in front of them, then “draft” one card from the pack to keep for their deck. They pass the pack to the left and repeat the process until all cards in each player’s booster are gone. You repeat the process with each pack, rotating passing directions each time (right first, then left, then right, and so on). The challenge of assessing each booster pack, considering what your tablemates are drafting, building your own deck, and playing the games makes this a great fit for the most experienced players.

Minimum deck size: 1 Starting Character card, 40 card deck, with all other cards from your draft picks counting as one’s “sideboard.”

Additional rules: you’re free to run symbol restrictions in one of two ways for Booster Draft: the same as Sealed, where there are none and which is referred to as “Modified Draft,” or traditional draft restriction wherein one symbol on each card must match the player’s character. Like Sealed Deck, when a player “cycles” their deck they only remove 5 cards.

Teams Prefix

Teams events are a format prefix that can be added to any other legal format. Teams is an exciting new way to play with your friends as players form a team of 3 players and play best of 3 matches against another team of 3 players. Following all rules of the decided format along with the additional deckbuilding rules of shared restrictions. Teams may not share any of the same character cards between their individual Player decks. Along with all Team members decks not share the same Primary Symbol AND Players cannot have more than two playsets of a card amongst all three team members. For Teams matches, all Players will reveal their starting characters simultaneously. The teams will then determine which players will battle each other by randomly determining which team gets first pick, then picking what character from their team battles their rival teams character. The second team then decide who faces who with the remaining characters. These unique deckbuilding restrictions and team comradery make this format type a community favorite!

3v3 Prefix

3v3 events are a format prefix that can be added to any other legal format. Where as Teams allows 3 different players to play vs another team, 3v3 is a unique format meant to emulate “Tag style” fighting games. These matches follow the rules of the format the 3v3 prefix is attached to with the following exceptions.

Deck building:

Players construct a deck and choose 3 different character cards. The deck must be legal for all 3 character cards as if they were each the character of their own deck.

Setup:

At the start of the game players will choose an order to use their characters, “Point” being first, “Main” being second, “Anchor” being third”, then present their character cards in order they will be played to their rival.

Players will proceed to play a traditional game of UniVersus with their first character and the following adjustments:

Additional Rules:

  1. Once a character is defeated that player will replace it with their next character in order until all 3 characters have been defeated, at which point they lose.
  2. Whenever a player swaps in a new character the current combat phase ends. Players will choose up to 8 non-character cards in their stage then sacrifice the rest (Active player chooses first). Maintain all other aspects of the game including cards in hand, momentum, deck, discard, etc.
  3. When a player cycles their deck, instead of removing 10 cards they will lose 2 health at the end of that turn for each time they have cycled during the game.

Alternate Art Cards

Cards that are an alternate art of a standard issue card are allowed to be used in place of the standard issue card as if it was a copy of that same card. This does not allow a deck to contain more than 4 copies of a single card.

Chrome Rare Cards

Chrome Rare Cards are serialized cards done in an unique foil treatment and are versions of standard issue cards. Chrome Rare Cards are allowed to be used in place of the standard issue card as if it was a copy of that same card. This does not allow a deck to contain more than 4 copies of a single card.

Reprinted Cards

When cards have the same name as cards from a previous UniVersus product where the symbols, difficulty, and check are all the same and the game text is identical or nearly identical, they can be considered the same card. Changes in terminology like ‘vitality’ to ‘health’ or ‘add this card to your staging area’ to “build it” should NOT be considered different functionality. If an old version of a card did not have a block and has been reprinted with a block, all versions of the card are considered to now possess a block.
