UniVersus 3v3 Match Mode
Below you will find rules for playing the UniVersus 3v3 match mode. Inspired by The King of Fighters– this mode is for players that:
- Love the idea of injecting extra narrative into their decks and games
- Deck building under new constraints
- Playing longer games that give you a chance to show it all off!
Deck building:
Players construct a deck and choose 3 different character cards. The deck must be legal for all 3 character cards. (The The King of Fighters XV Challenger Series decks meet these requirements out of the box!)
Setup:
At the start of the game players will choose an order to use their characters, then present their character cards in order to their rival.
Additional Rules:
Players will proceed to play a traditional game of UniVersus with their first character and the following adjustments:
- Once a character is defeated that player will replace it with their next character in order until all 3 characters have been defeated, at which point they lose.
- Whenever a player swaps in a new character the current combat phase ends. Players will choose up to 8 non-character cards in their stage then sacrifice the rest (Active player chooses first). Maintain all other aspects of the game including cards in hand, momentum, deck, discard, etc.
- When a player cycles their deck, instead of removing 10 cards they will lose 2 health at the end of that turn for each time they have cycled during the game.
It is as simple as that! Hopefully you will find this new style of play interesting. Like all of our rules documentation, this will be a living document so keep in mind there could be adjustments in the future.
FAQ:
Is there sideboarding? No, 3v3 games are one game matches, but if you have time for an epic two out of three exchange we won’t stop you!
Do all of the characters have to use the same symbol? Generally yes, but technically, no. The deck must be constructed legal for each character, if you’re playing standard that would mean using standard rules. If every card in your deck has both the Fire and Good symbols, you can pair a character that has fire but not good, with another character that has good but not fire. You don’t need to declare the same symbol, but it must be a legal deck under the format you are playing.
Can I attack with my newly brought in character right away? Yes! You’ll follow all of the rules of a normal game, but once a character is KO’d the game doesn’t start over, it just continues with the new character.
How does deckbuilding work if I put May on my team? Unfortunately, the ability to alter deck building rules with characters like May doesn’t mesh well within this format. Creating a deck with 5+ of a card, which May permits, does not lead to a valid deck for the rest of your team.
