TEKKEN™ 8 Booster Series Dev Diary .I – Heat Tokens

One of the fun things about adapting a game is that a game isn’t just made up of the people, places, and events of its world, it’s also defined by its gameplay mechanics. This can be especially interesting when adapting one game into another game. I’ve talked a bit about this with past releases that featured other gaming franchises, and with TEKKEN™ 8, that journey continues.

The new mechanic TEKKEN 8 introduced to the series is “Heat”, a temporary mode that your character can activate to gain a variety of effects. The most consistent effect Heat provides is chip damage: small amounts of damage your rival takes whenever they block your attacks. This was the primary inspiration for Heat’s base effect in Universus.

What’s a Heat Token?

The Heat Token gives you the following ability:

Response: After your attack deals no damage, your rival loses 1 health. This ability cannot reduce your rival’s health below 1.

An ability like this helps you whittle down your rival’s health, even in situations where they can defend against everything.

How Do I Get a Heat Token?

There are a variety of cards in the set that will grant Heat Tokens in different ways, but there are also some go-to tools available at lower rarities.

At common rarity, under each character’s symbol spread, you’ll find a 1 difficulty foundation that can grant you a Heat Token if you remove 10 cards from your discard pile.

At uncommon rarity, under each character’s symbol spread, you’ll find an attack that can grant you a Heat Token by removing 4 cards from your discard pile.

These are the baseline ways of gaining Heat Tokens, but you’ll find much more variety throughout the rest of the set.

What Do I Do with My Heat Token?

Heat Tokens provide a beneficial effect on their own, but you’ll also find additional Heat synergies throughout the set. One notable use of Heat in TEKKEN 8 is the Heat Breaker, a powerful move that consumes your Heat state to perform. You’ll find representations of that mechanic as well.

Like the other recent token mechanics we’ve introduced, the Heat Token can be found on the backs of all 14 standard rarity printing character cards.
