Battra Arrives – Banned in Standard Format

This card was designed in a space of trying to be a premium 3-difficulty version of some previous iterations that all saw some level of play in the past. The early game impact of this card isn’t the problem so much as the late game impact. Rather than being a tool against aggression, it has become a reliable way to walk yourself deeper into deadlock without ramification since it not only cancels but seals repeatable punishes for the turn. When played in multiples, it’s a consistent safeguard against the checks that normally punish such wide foundation builds, and it sees play at max copies in decks that are relying on it. With these considerations, it is time that Battra Arrives now departs.
Gravity-Beam Volley – Banned in Hero Too and Retro Formats

From the outset, Gravity-Beam Volley was designed with the intent that there were a few interesting things that it could do within its own set and some other minor plays using the broader pool of available cards, but we wanted to see what people could come up with to fully utilize it. What didn’t show in foresight was it being the key of an infinite loop mill deck that is very difficult to interact with. There are a couple of current variations, but the most powerful by far right now is the Sir Nighteye deck in both of the Hero Too and Retro formats. You’re only given the opportunity to respond to the attack being played. Despite the 1-check, this deck is able to get turn 2 wins consistently. For that reason, we’re banning it from those formats.
