Season 2 OCE Major Regional Recap

Leenoco Guile

With there being a week break in between the Season 2 Regional split, I wanted to take a few moments to talk about the previous regionals in the OCE and NA regions. Starting with our players from down under in the OCE Region. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi!

The Season 2 OCE Major Regional took place next to the coast in Wollongong, New South Wales. An absolute fantastic location for our players to come out and enjoy the wonderful mix of nature with the urban comforts the city has to offer. With competitors from all over the OCE Region and one joining us all the way from Texas, USA on holiday, the competition was fierce for the title of champion..

The OCE Major Regional had a great spread of characters as main and as sideboard options from all of the UniVersus products in standard. With the most popular character being one of the oldest in the format, Mina Ashido .II. A character that really expresses the aggression playstyle that was prevalent at the event. New characters to UniVersus, Godzilla and Rodan, made a monster-sized splash as well with their first major event being legal in the format, giving them both a very strong appearance for the event.

The top cut for the event was also very diverse with the only characters doubling up being Godzilla, King Of The Monsters and Pony Tsunotori. Rounding out the aggressive nature of the OCE meta, we had Ochaco Uraraka .IV, Younger Toguro, and Rodan. The outlier to the all out aggression shown was from the Swiss Champion, Bailey Funayama-Sigsworth, on the character he has been playing since MHA Set 3, the long-game nature of Toru Hagakure .II on the Water symbol.

There can only be one winner of the event, with the finals coming down to Nathan Amos with Godzilla and Karl Bennett with Ochcaco Uraraka .IV. With the surprise of the match being Karl swapping to Spike, Bounty Hunter from the side board for games 2 and 3, letting Karl take the title of champion.

Thank you again to the Illawarra Steelers Club and Grimdark Gaming for hosting such an amazing event, and I look forward to seeing what the OCE meta will bring at the Season 3 OCE Major Regional in October!
