TEKKEN™ 8 Booster Series Dev Diary .III – Final Round

TEKKEN™ 8 Booster Series Dev Diary .III – Final Round

Time marches on as we get closer to the UniVersus release of TEKKEN 8. We are less than 5 weeks away from prerelease.

Recently, we gave you an overview on the new Heat mechanic. Heat is the backbone of the TEKKEN 8 set. In fact, it is referenced approximately 78 times across cards in the set! Among those cards you have:

  • Heat generators, cards that make Heat Tokens.
  • Heat boosters, effects that improve if you have a Heat Token.
  • Heat smashes, cards that cost a Heat Token to play.

All of these mechanics work together to give TEKKEN 8 its own unique feel within the broader game of UniVersus.

Another mechanic TEKKEN 8 utilizes Heat for is the Heat Dash. Within the video game, you can use a Heat Dash to cancel certain moves and move directly to your opponent with frame advantage, letting you extend a combo or block string. We wanted to make sure we paid homage to this ability within our set:

That doesn’t mean TEKKEN 8 is all Heat all the time. None of the 15 new character cards ushered in by the set use Heat, and there are plenty of standalone strategies and tools.

The other new mechanic introduced with TEKKEN 8 is the new card type Arena. Arenas are a much more experimental mechanic, so you won’t find too many cards referencing them yet. The design team is eager to see what kind of impact they make.

There are a good deal of Actions and Assets in the set, 15 and 10 respectively.

I think this is a good time to drop a handful of tidbits about the set:

  • There are two cards with Taunt in the set.
  • There are twenty-seven cards with Kick. This keyword trait can be tough to fit into some sets, but not here!
  • There is an ability that can ready 3! foundations.
  • There is a new experimental ability template used on two cards in the set.
  • There are two 2 checks in the set, and no 1 checks.

Speaking of Taunt and Kick, here is a fun little uncommon to keep the pressure on.

Okay, that’s it for now—we don’t want to give away the whole thing. You can get ready for the next battle yourself by signing up for a TEKKEN 8 Prerelease at your local game stores starting on Aug 7th. Prerelease will be the only place you can find the exclusive mechanically unique promo Jin Kazama Character card to add to your collection. Find a store hosting UniVersus near you!
