TEKKEN™ 8 Booster Series Dev Diary .II – Arena Cards
Welcome back to our inside look at the upcoming Tekken 8 booster set for UniVersus. So far, we’ve introduced you to our newest token mechanic, Heat, as well as the Heat Smash style of attacks for the characters in the set. Today, we want to share with you the second new mechanic of the set: Arenas.
“Arena” is a new card type that represents a specific location where Universus battles can take place. UniVersus has always been a game about your favorite fighters from different worlds colliding on the battlefield. Arenas will let our players accentuate that feeling by having that battlefield represented directly on the table.
They each have a difficulty, a check, and symbols, and they may or may not have a block. (Don’t worry. All Tekken 8 Arenas have a block. You can block with a place as well as your face.) You have probably also noticed that they are horizontal/landscape-oriented. Just for clarity, we’d like to point out that this does not mean they are considered committed.

When you play an Arena, it will go to a new game zone: the arena deck! The arena deck is a shared game zone. All players’ arenas will occupy it in the order they are added. When you play an arena, you will add it to the bottom of the arena deck face down.
The arena deck consists of all the Arena cards that have been added to it. The top card of the arena deck is face up and is the Active Arena. Face down cards in the arena deck are not active and are not considered in play for game effects. The arena deck also does not exist in any stage, but will be added to the group of game zones considered “in play.” Face down cards in the arena deck are not active, have hidden publicity, and cannot be interacted with unless an effect specifically references them. Because they have a hidden publicity, you cannot look at the non-active cards in the arena deck for any reason.
Additionally, all arenas in Tekken 8 have the same continuous effect on them: “When you play or check this card, you may add it to the bottom of the arena deck.” This will let you quickly get the arena deck going. If you play Elegant Palace during your turn, you get to immediately add it to the Arena Deck. This does not count as clearing a card from your card pool, though it does count as a card leaving your card pool. If there are no cards in the Arena deck at the time you add it, it will go straight to the top of the deck face up and become the active arena, ready for use! Because these Arenas are put into play immediately upon play, you will get the first chance to break!

One of the key features of stages in Tekken 8, represented by arena cards, is the ability to perform a stage break. Just like in Tekken 8, breaking an arena in Universus requires a certain amount of damage and does away with that arena. When you break an arena by dealing a certain amount of damage over the course of the turn, you move it to its owner’s discard pile and get an effect.

In the case of Elegant Palace, you have to deal 6 or more damage over the course of the turn. This is tracked independently for each player. Once you have dealt a total of 6 damage or more, it will cause Elegant Palace to break, providing the detailed effect. So your next attack would get a speed and damage bonus of +1 each. After Elegant Palace breaks, the next card in the Arena Deck would be turned face up and become active.
There are seven total Arenas in Tekken 8, and they have varying effects. But below is also an example of ways card effects can interact with arenas. Take a look at Depraved Savagery, an attack that can get rid of an Arena you would prefer not to deal with:

While this is a great overview of the main points of information about the new Arena card type. Full details will be included in the rules reference update before the set releases. Please, tell us what you think about these new cards, and how excited you are for them and the rest of the cards in Tekken 8! Below you’ll find a preview of all the arenas in the set.
