BAN AND ERRATA UPDATE 08/05/2025
UVS Games Game Design Team
There are no changes to the Ban & Errata list this month.
Coming off of the Louisville Regional where backup centric gameplans saw their first time in the limelight, and the release of the upcoming Booster Set: TMNT, we believe there is more to see players bring to the format rather than take immediate action on any particular strategy. We’ve seen a large spread of game plans finding homes in competitive play and are eagerly watching the metagame develop and we will be very closely monitoring the results of our upcoming Alicante, Canberra, and Courtice Regional events!
However, there is one change to the UniVersus rules this month:
Effective immediately, we are making the following change to the UniVersus rules.
Unique
Unique grants “While this card is in your stage, if there are 2 or more copies of it in your stage, sacrifice the copy that was most recently added.”
Pause Conditions
If a player has 2 or more copies of the same card with Unique in their stage, they sacrifice 1 copy that was most recently added.
If 1 or more face down cards are unflipped, and the unflipped card(s) results in 2 or more copies of the same card with Unique in the stage, that player sacrifices the unflipped copies.
Let’s discuss this change and why we’re making it.
With this new rule, when additional copies of a card with Unique are built, players will no longer choose which copy to sacrifice. The new card(s) will be sacrificed. The new sub-item on the Pause Condition section will also cover the occurrence of what happens when a card is unflipped, as that is not being added to the stage at the time of the game event of unflipping.
From a designer standpoint, Unique is a tool we use with the intent of making it very difficult to activate the abilities on a card more than once in a turn. The reality is the Unique keyword as it was a small inconvenience for most decks. Oftentimes the destroy clause of Unique actually helps you create pathways to multiple activations. Throughout the game’s long history, players have found ways to circumvent the intended limitations of Unique. Cards like True Identity and Clandestine Research found some incredibly powerful play patterns by inching around the limitations of Unique. We don’t want to completely remove our players ability to find creative ways in deckbuilding to leverage powerful cards, but we do want to make it so circumventing Unique specifically is more challenging. We also wanted to implement a fairly straightforward rule adjustment that keeps most of the original functionality of the Unique rule. We don’t take decisions like this lightly, but we believe this is the right time to make the adjustment for the long term benefit of the game.
